Adaptations
Compliments:Biology 91155 (2.3), Biology 90929 (1.5), Biology 91603 (3.3)
Guided by our Natureland Educator, students will embark on an interactive journey to explore the fascinating connections between animals, their habitats, and their amazing adaptations!
Together, we will investigate a diverse range of species from Aotearoa and beyond. Instead of just reading about adaptations, students will see them in practice—like the Kea, the world’s only alpine parrot, with its "Swiss Army knife" beak and incredible intelligence, or our Meerkats, with their "built-in sunglasses" and expert digging paws.
This session is designed to spark a sense of wonder and equip students with the "scientific eyes" needed to continue exploring adaptations for the rest of their visit!
Behavioural Enrichment
Ever wonder how we keep a cheeky Kea busy or a curious Capuchin engaged? Learn how our dedicated keepers at Natureland Zoo ensure every animal—from the smallest lizard to the most playful farm friend—continues to use their inquisitive mind and express natural behaviours.
Guided by our Educator, students will get a "behind-the-scenes" look at the science of animal well-being. They’ll have the exciting, hands-on opportunity to design and create interactive enrichment items for our residents!
From complex puzzles and scent trails to surprising new ways to play, students will explore the creative side of conservation. It’s more than just fun; it’s a deep dive into why mental stimulation is vital for the health and happiness of the wildlife we care for.
Classification
From the soft wool of an alpaca to the ancient scales of a Tuatara, Natureland is a living classroom of diversity! In this interactive session, students become "Junior Taxonomists," learning the essential skills of scientific observation and grouping.
Guided by our educator, students will explore the zoo to identify the distinct features that make every living thing unique. Whether it’s distinguishing a bird from a mammal or uncovering the hidden world of invertebrates, this session brings the "Living World" strand of the curriculum to life.
Endangered Species
At Natureland Zoo, we believe that connecting with animals is the heart of conservation. Our mission is to build a future for wildlife through active science—from our local Breed for Release mahi to our role as a sanctuary for international treasures.
Guided by our educator, students will discover the real-world stories of species on the brink. We’ll explore the main threats to endangered animals—both in our Nelson-Tasman backyard and across the globe—while celebrating the "conservation optimism" that drives our work.
Wild Aotearoa
Compliments: Biology 91605 (3.5)
Aotearoa is home to some truly incredible wildlife! At Natureland Zoo, your students will have the unique opportunity to get up close and personal with our native treasures—from the iconic Tuatara and cheeky Kākā to the secretive Kea.
Guided by our passionate educator, students will explore our dedicated native habitats to uncover the stories of New Zealand’s extraordinary biodiversity. This session is designed to spark curiosity and foster a lifelong commitment to Kaitiakitanga, empowering the next generation to protect our precious species right here in Whakatū.
